Theatrical Activism and the First Amendment
L.M. Bogad and ACLU attorney Peter Eliasberg presented a workshop for Fringe Benefits Theatre, June 2026.
On June 5, 2026, I joined ACLU attorney Peter Eliasberg for a workshop with Fringe Benefits Theatre in Los Angeles: “Theatrical Activism and the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech and Assembly in Creative Protest.”
We explored the relationship between creative protest and First Amendment protections, bringing together practical perspectives on tactical performance with the legal questions surrounding freedom of speech and assembly.
It was great to work with Peter; I would share an example of a past creative action and its political/aesthetic aspects and tactics, and he would then reflect the larger legal and constitutional issues around each specific action.
